Captain(s) Log: March 2021

8 March: Long day in car trying to find somewhere that appealed to camp and in the end we landed up in a caravan park surrounded by pensioners who live here for up to 30 days a a time.  First stop in Overberg did not appeal as it was just another site on the edge of a river surrounded by a working farm, 1 hour later and we found pretty much the some, another hour later and the place had permanently closed, grrr.  On the plus side we both saw some new roads, mountains and the very pretty village of Greyton.

9 March: Frustration levels are high.  Weather is krap with loads of wind, caravan park life surrounded by silverbacks is boring (nothing against Silverbacks but 20+ years age difference is large in particular when combined with an old mindset..). This is very much a generalisation as we have also met a number of inspirational older people who are out their travelling, exploring and most definitely acting much younger than their peer group but it feels like the current crowd are just parked here waiting to pass on.

10 March:  Last night was probably the windiest we have experienced in Mr J, we got rocked so much it even made cooking difficult, so not much sleep for either of us.  Had a nice day out though with a wine tasting followed by lunch of ribs (something we don’t typically cook in Mr J).

11 March: A reminder, after a lovely evening with Vivian & Hanlie who are easily the same age as most of the silverbacks here, that age can just be a number if you have the right attitude.

15 March: Deja Vu, yesterday evening we arrived back at Sams place exactly 51 weeks after our first visit, in which we ended up spending nearly 4 months thanks to Covid and today we are running around on familiar roads to familiar shops getting errands and jobs done.

18 March:  Had such an awesome evening last night with Denver, Corrine and Wade.  Naturally Denver spoilt us with more cookies to take home and half of the cake he baked for dessert.

24 March:  It’s been a great week at Samantha’s but it’s equally good to be back on the road, even if Mr Jones is misbehaving a bit with a rather rapidly rising coolant temperature on the uphills.  Suspect the water pump is not working optimally but going to need this looked at.

29 March:  A reminder that travelling, for us, is so much more about the experiences and people we meet versus the physical places we visit or sights we see! A random passing of a chap driving an old Landy and asking if we needed any work done on Mr J resulted in a fantastic workshop experience and Mr Jones falling in love

30 March: What a pleasure to be able to drive Mr J and not be stressing about his coolant temperature levels and what else might be wrong.  In hindsight the issue has been around for a while but was not obvious as to the cause, so hopefully our cautious driving and the “engine guard” temperature monitor will have helped prevent creating any bigger problems, time will tell…
