Captain(s) Log: April 2021

April:  A relatively long Easter weekend as we escaped into the Karoo mountains near Calitzdorp in order to avoid crowds and any booking issues.

April:  A brief stop near Calitzdorp spa in order to ensure we have cell signal to catch-up with family, wish Stuart’s mom happy birthday and sadly learn of health issues with his Dad.

April: Yesterday didn’t quite turn out as planned but in the end was very nice as our little bush camp next to the side of the road on the way into Die Hell was heaven. Spectacular mountains and scenery

April: Very frustrated! Spent close to 4 hours in the surf today and caught half a wave.  The point break (Victoria Bay) is just so crowded so opportunities are few and far between plus to take off you have to takeoff very close to the rocks and generally ride the bay right on edge of rocks so I am generally intimidated.

April: A much better day today, surfed inside the bay on more the beach break and while the wave wasn’t rideable for long got some much needed pop-up practise and more importantly had fun

April:  Sometimes it is very hard being far from family when they need you. Hard not too feel guilty but then again even if we just lived in different cities the circumstances would be the some.

April: Been an awesome weekend.  Plettenburgh Bay surprised us and the in particular the Keurboom river.  Had an awesome two days paddling up on the SUP, great little picnic sites only accessible from the river. All in all very cool.

April:  Bit of a stuff up today, managed to destroy a tyre on a sharp rock in the Baviaanskloof and they don’t come cheap!  Admittedly the tyres are near the end of their life but was hoping for a few more months but guess but on the otherhand at leas it’s the first puncture in over 150 000km with Mr J.

April: Meltdown day! Combination of a couple hour drive into PE, then a fairly lengthy tyre purchase and change process combined with a lack of food and some silly miscommunications..

April:  Great catchup with Kitty & Gerrie the last 2 days, whom we met in Malawi in September 2019 and so good to see they haven’ lost their adventurous spirit despite the challenges with Gerrie knees.

April:  Back at Mdumbi for hopefully a good few weeks of surfing.  Somehow feels like we are on holiday

April:  End of the holidays, at least for Tania.  By chance an opportunity presented itself to volunteer as part of the reception staff and for that effort we save on camping and some meals so Tania put her hand up.  First employment in 2 years, its going to be interesting.
